The Finding Our Roots African American Museum's Blood, Sweat, and Tears exhibit was featured in Smithsonian Magazine. 

The museum was closed last year during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the unveiling of the Blood, Sweat, and Tears exhibit was the main event at the April 24, 2021 grand reopening.

Blood, Sweat, and Tears details the Wanderer, a yacht which illegally transported enslaved people to the United States long after the Transatlantic Slave Trade was abolished. The exhibit also features: 

• Photos from the last years of legal slavery
• Collections of soil from local plantations
• Documents to help visitors trace their family connections to enslaved people from local plantations

For founder, president, and curator of the museum, Margie Scoby, creating the exhibit was a deeply personal experience. She said, “It can become overwhelming, but my ancestors drive me.”

The Finding Our Roots African American Museum celebrates African American history in Terrebonne, Lafourche, and St. Mary parishes. It is located at 918 Roussell Street, Houma, Louisiana 70360. The museum's hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm.
