The holiday season is a wonderful time to visit loved ones. In fact, it is estimated that over 53 million Americans will travel during this holiday season. Follow these tips to ensure safe travels for you and your loved ones:

  • Prep your vehicle before leaving. Make sure you are up-to-date on maintenance on your vehicle. Check your tires, make sure all your fluids are filled, and get an oil change if you are due for one.
  • Pack emergency supplies. Keep an emergency kit in your car with basic supplies such as batteries, a first aid kit, blanket, jumper cables, snacks, and a portable cell phone charger.
  • Take preventative measures against theft. Each year, theft spikes around the holidays. Protect yourself from this threat by keeping shopping bags and wrapped gifts out of sight. Lock your doors when you leave your vehicle.
  • Rest before driving. Driving when you are tired can be incredibly dangerous. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep before leaving, take regular breaks, and swap out drivers when needed to make sure that the person driving the car is always alert.
  • Add extra time to your schedule. There is increased traffic on the road during the holidays. Plan accordingly by adding extra time to your schedule in case of traffic jams or accidents. Be mindful of alternate routes available if you are caught in traffic.
  • Designate a sober driver. Use a designated driver to ensure guests make it home safely after a holiday party or any occasion where alcohol is served.
  • Avoid distractions. Safe driving requires all of your attention and focus. Put your cell phone away and do not answer calls, texts, or check social media while driving.
  • Drive defensively. Be aware of other drivers on the road and recognize hazards so that you can avoid accidents before they happen.
  • Buckle up. Seatbelts are perhaps the most effective safety feature in your vehicle. Remember, all drivers and passengers are required by law to wear seatbelts. Louisiana is a Click It or Ticket state.
