Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Fight Coastal Erosion Jan. 6-10

Terrebonne Parish will once again be participating in a Christmas Tree Recycling Program to help with the public awareness of coastal erosion.

To participate in this program, residents of Terrebonne Parish are requested to place their Christmas trees in the area of their normal garbage pickup from January 6 to 10, 2020.

Residents may also drop off their Christmas trees at the following locations:

  • 236 Ashland Landfill Road, Houma
  • 651 Isle of Cuba Road, Schriever
  • 160 Crochetville Road, Montegut

The Christmas trees collected from local residents are placed into retention fences, also called cribs, that have been constructed along the Intracoastal Waterway near the Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge. These trees provide an effective wave-break, which can reduce the erosion of our fragile marshes. When set in place, the project is designed to allow the trees to work with natural wave action and act as a filter, collecting sediments behind the cribs to help build new land.

Only green trees will be accepted. Flocked trees and trees with tinsel, decorations, or tree stands cannot be used.
