DOTD To Start Luling Bridge Replacement And Repairs Project

Lane and ramp closures scheduled; motorists should expect delays

ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will soon begin a $24.5 million project to replace the Interstate 310/Luling (Hale Boggs) Bridge deck and perform repairs. Lane and ramp closures will be required during construction. Beginning on Jan. 31 at 8 p.m., planned closures include one lane on southbound I-310. The northbound lanes will remain open.

In mid-February 2016, a full closure of the northbound span of the bridge including a traffic switch of the northbound travel lanes to the southbound span will take place. Motorists should expect delays during peak hours. DOTD traffic engineers derived from a traffic study that providing only one lane for northbound traffic would result in significant delays throughout the day from the morning peak hour until the end of the evening peak hour.

The most non-disruptive alternative is providing two lanes northbound to reduce the impact to motorists by allowing them to experience one-half of their daily commute with minimal disruption.

Based on the data, during each closure, two northbound lanes and one southbound lane will remain open at all times. This is the best and least impactful solution to benefit the traveling public.

The project involves removing and replacing the deck of the bridge and will include minor maintenance repairs. The contractor, C.E.C., Inc., will perform the work designed to preserve the structure and improve the roadway surface. The project is estimated for completion by mid-June 2016.

All planned construction activities are weather-dependent and may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to drive with caution through this and other highway work zones.  Also, be alert for the presence of construction workers and equipment.
