Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government strongly advises that all new construction and elevations raise to the proposed DFIRM height. Building to the current ABFE while legal, may significantly increase insurance payments in the future. Projects receiving federal funding are often required to build to the proposed DFIRM +1'.
The flood insurance rate map is the official map of Terrebonne Parish that displays the floodplain, more explicitly special hazard areas and risk premium zones as determined by FEMA. This is the map that is used by insurance companies for flood insurance purposes.
The advisory base flood elevation map was developed for Terrebonne Parish in November 2005 after Hurricane Rita. This map was adopted by Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government as the minimum standard for all construction purposes.
The proposed digital flood insurance rate map was developed by FEMA to replace both the FIRM and ABFE once adopted by Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government. Although it has not yet been adopted, we strongly advise that all new construction be built to the proposed DFIRM height.
