FloodSafe Minute: How to Make Insurance Claims After an Event

Following Tropical Storm Arthur, many Terrebonne Parish residents experienced flooding in their homes. The Parish is working to identify impacted areas and assist in efforts to reduce future residential flooding.

Terrebonne Parish is currently accepting applications for the elevation or reconstruction of flood-damaged homes that are covered under National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policies.

Residents may obtain an application by calling 985-873-6565, emailing RAMP@tpcg.org, or visiting 8026 Main Street, Houma, LA. Applications were opened prior to the storm and will close in early July. Residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Homeowners who do not currently carry flood insurance are strongly encouraged to obtain a policy. Maintaining flood insurance may help make properties eligible for future mitigation grant opportunities.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided guidance on filing flood insurance claims through the following video: youtube.com/watch?v=OeaI973gFjo.

Residents are also encouraged to use the Louisiana Department of Insurance’s fillable Home Inventory Checklist to document personal belongings: ldi.la.gov/docs/default-source/documents/publicaffairs/consumerpublications/homeinventorycklist_web_fillable.pdf.

Additional guidance on documenting personal property is available in a video message from the Louisiana Commissioner of Insurance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyPsESBqdAA.
