Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet announced Monday afternoon that Terrebonne Parish was still actively engaged in monitoring and contingency planning in response to the Transocean BP Horizon oil spill. “I was on a conference call on Sunday and Monday with President Barack Obama and Admiral Thad Allen of the Coast Guard in response to local concerns and issues,” stated President Claudet. Terrebonne Parish Public Safety and Emergency Operations officials as well as Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois also attended an informational briefing and planning session sponsored by Governor Bobby Jindal Saturday night in Baton Rouge. As of Monday afternoon, NOAA forecasts tracks for the oil movement show Terrebonne Parish not to be in the strike area yet Terrebonne Parish officials are not putting their guard down. Parish officials met again Monday morning and poured over maps of coastal Terrebonne Parish to coordinate with State and Federal officials on the critical areas of Terrebonne’s coast that must be protected should the spill come this way. Also, parish officials are coordinating with the Coast Guard to identify locations that training can be provided to local fisherman and boat owners on safe response to the incident. This training should begin by mid-week and more information will be forthcoming on this.
