Thursday December 17, 2009 01:16 pm - 2772 Views

According to the National Weather Service in Slidell, LA, the Terrebonne Parish area could receive another 1.5 to 2 inches of rainfall today with the low pressure system moving across the northwester Gulf of Mexico today and tomorrow. The Parish’s Public Works Department is continuing to work hard in an effort to ensure that the drainage system and roadways are in operating condition. Light to moderate rainfall can be expected in our area through this afternoon with moderate to heavy rainfall from 6PM to midnight as the low pressure system passes due south of Terrebonne Parish. Some areas of Terrebonne Parish has experienced up to 15" of rainfall since December 1st and the ground is super-saturated. The natural retention areas of the Parish are also experiencing high levels of water. Residents are warned that flash flooding may occur quickly due to the natural retention areas being full and the saturated soils which will allow for rainfall run-off to quickly cause street flooding. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to protect their property. Residents may obtain sand and sand bags at the following locations; Bayou Cane Volunteer Fire Department – Central Station, Schriever Volunteer Fire Department, Bayou Black Volunteer Fire Department, and Gibson Volunteer Fire Department. Residents are reminded not to drive through flooded streets for their own safety and to prevent wave action that may push water into residences and businesses. Local law enforcement are out patrolling flooded areas and enforcing barricades.
