As part of the “Passing it On” workshop series, Tradition Bearer Geraldine Robertson will teach participants the art of making split oak baskets from start to finish, from gathering materials in the woods to constructing a basket to keep!
Location: Waterlife Museum at 7910 Park Ave in Houma
Dates: March 17-March 21, 2025
Times: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily
In this free workship, participants will learn the art of making split oak baskets from start to finish in a five-day series. Geraldine Robertson is eager to educate participants every inch of the way from locating, throwing (taking down), and busting (splitting) the tree in the woods to gathering weaving strips (thinner split white oak material) and posts (thicker split white oak material) and ultimately fashioning handmade baskets from the collected materials.
In partnership with the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, the Helio Foundation, and the Rougarou Fest, this workshop is funded with support from the Louisiana Folklore Society, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Louisiana Division of the Arts, and the Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism. The "Passing It On" workshop series is being presented with the objective of passing on the knowledge and tradition of this craft which is one of the most endangered traditions.
