The Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government Senior Utility Service Worker – Gas is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of the municipal natural gas distribution system by performing both routine and emergency tasks.
In this role, the Sr. Utility Service Worker – Gas will be expected to perform tasks required by CFR Part 192.801, including excavation, valve servicing, leak investigation, and line repairs in full compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, while maintaining a strong commitment to public safety, operational reliability, and quality customer service.

- Maintain personal telephone service
- Install and remove natural gas meters and service lines for residential and commercial properties in accordance with established safety and operational standards.
- Respond to reports of suspected gas leaks and customer service concerns with urgency and professionalism, conducting thorough investigations and initiating corrective actions as needed.
- Diagnose and implement interim or permanent solutions for leaks in meters, service valves, and service lines; accurately locate leak sources to assist repair crews.
- Support gas repair crews in system maintenance activities, including excavation, pipe installation, leak repair, and site restoration.
- Utilize specialized equipment such as combustible gas indicators, line locators, and other detection instruments to perform system diagnostics.
- Maintain strict adherence to all safety protocols and regulations to ensure public and employee safety during all work activities.
- Perform assigned tasks in compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, specifically 49 CFR Part 192.801 governing natural gas pipeline safety.
- Participate in safety meetings, job assignment meetings, and daily preparation activities.
- Participate in quarterly and annual inspections, including valve inspections and cathodic protection system maintenance.
- Perform any additional task as required by Supervisor.
- Leadership Skills: Demonstrates initiative and accountability in field operations, often guiding or supporting team efforts during repairs and emergency responses ensuring work is completed safely while fostering a collaborative, efficient team environment.
- Time Management: Effectively prioritizes tasks to respond promptly to gas leaks, complete service orders, and meet regulatory deadlines.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to identify and address issues such as leaks, malfunctions, or maintenance needs in gas lines, valves by accurately interpreting data from detection instruments and site conditions and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Communication Skills: Ability to clearly and professionally convey technical information to supervisors, team members, and customers while maintaining professionalism in high-pressure situations.
- Organizational Skills: Must be meticulousness in tasks such as line inspections, equipment maintenance, testing new service lines, and maintaining accurate service records while following structured procedures to ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Technical Skills: Expertise with gas transmission and distribution systems, including valves, meters, pipelines, and safety regulations outlined in CFR Part 192.801. Ability to understand and operate tools, machinery, and equipment necessary for gas line installation, repair, and maintenance.
- Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED certification required.
- Two (2) years of work experience in the operation and maintenance of natural gas distribution systems.
- Ability to become qualified on all tasks within the six-month probationary period of employment. During this time, employee will be allowed two attempts at each task to demonstrate qualification. Second failure will result in termination.
