Mechanic I

Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government’s Mechanic I is responsible for performing skilled maintenance and repair work on wastewater treatment plant equipment, vehicles, and related systems.

In this role, the incumbent will be expected to ensure optimal operation of wastewater treatment plant equipment through scheduled preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities.

The Mechanic I is also responsible for grounds maintenance, operational support, emergency response, and adherence to all safety and regulatory standards.

  • Valid Louisiana driver’s license
  • LA DHH-OHP Wastewater Treatment III certification or the ability to obtain certification

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on wastewater treatment plant equipment, vehicles, and machinery using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Operate belt press equipment and assist senior mechanics with troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Conduct routine inspections of plant equipment, package plants, and underground storage tanks to ensure proper functionality and compliance.
  • Complete scheduled lubrication of bearings, oil changes, and belt replacements on equipment.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of parts and supplies; request orders as needed.
  • Perform grounds maintenance, including grass cutting and general site upkeep.
  • Clean tanks, chlorine contact chambers, and other plant components as part of scheduled and as-needed maintenance.
  • Assist with diagnosing pump issues, replacing bearings, and performing minor plumbing repairs.
  • Remove debris from pumps and unload deliveries using a forklift when required.
  • Collaborate with Instrumentation Technicians and other team members to complete assigned tasks efficiently.
  • Participate in quarterly One-on-One meetings with Supervisor.
  • Complete all required annual trainings—including ethics, harassment prevention, diversity, and cybersecurity—in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure all duties and responsibilities are performed with integrity, professionalism, and in good faith, consistently upholding and protecting the interests, reputation, and assets of the Parish government.
  • Perform any additional task as required by Supervisor.

  • Organizational Skills: Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, inventory levels, and compliance documentation to support operational efficiency.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrates proficiency in operating, maintaining, and repairing wastewater treatment plant equipment and associated mechanical systems.
  • Qualifications:
    • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
    • Experience in wastewater plant operation preferred.
