Rougarou Fest Strives to be a Zero Waste Event
The South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center plans to make the Rougarou Fest a Zero Waste Event within the next five years. A zero waste event follows sustainable practices to send the least possible amount of waste to landfills. The key to a zero waste event is careful planning so that all materials used and disposed of are reusable, recyclable or compostable.
With the help of Rougarou Fest’s Zero Waste Sponsor, Pelican Waste & Debris, the festival will set up stations for those recyclable and compostable materials.
Compostable items at the festival will include:
- Food waste
- compostable plates
- compostable utensils
- compostable cups
- paper towels
- paper napkins
Items to be recycled include:
- Plastic bottles
- Aluminum cans
- Non-food contaminated paper and cardboard
Items to be thrown in the trash include:
- Styrofoam bowls
- Plastic spoons
- Plastic cups
- Plastic bags
- Diapers
Festival organizers plan to finish using their current inventory, but will purchase products that are either compostable or recyclable in order to reduce the amount of waste that stays in landfills.
In addition to reducing the amount of trash produced by the event, we are proud to offer a recycling center where you can use the bottles and cans collected at the festival to buy stuff! Just bring your bottles or cans to the Rougarou Recycling Center to collect tickets and redeem prizes.
