On September 30, 2025, the federal government shut down, and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) expired. This often meant that federally backed mortgages for buildings in the special flood hazard area couldn’t close because flood insurance is a requirement. However, in recent years, private flood insurance policies have become more widely available, and real estate transactions and federal grant requirements can be satisfied with these policies. While Senator Cassidy has a bill prepared for reauthorization or reform at any time, it is unclear how long the process will take once the government is fully functional and the NFIP authorization bill is brought to the floor of both houses for a vote. For those who need a new flood insurance policy now for grant requirements or to buy a home, we are providing the names and contact information for firms that have expressed an interest in selling private flood insurance in Louisiana.
